By incorporating the routine of a partially planned dérive, the project challenged participants to recontextualize their environment and offered ways to stay engaged with what might initially seem like “the most ordinary-looking surroundings”.&nbsp;The project’s highlight was a public workshop that took the group along a single bus route across Glasgow, stopping at selected locations for conversations ranging from historical overviews to philosophical debates and general trivia, accompanied by small creative tasks. Hofstadter. To explain his various theories, the author draws on examples from mathematics, art, music, programming, and genetics. The typeface illustrates Layers of Stability, a brief section in which Hofstadter suggests that any event in life can be measured using constants, parameters, and variables. This system was adapted to create a strict set of rules for designing the typeface: the weight and proportions of the letters were constants; stroke angles served as parameters (less constant constants); and serifs were treated as variables. Does it need to be owned — like a home, a workplace, or a recreational area? If a place is defined by how it is or was used, does that not mean we can always reinvent it? The Underpass was a speculative study that posed all these questions. Its locus was a rather grim passage under the motorway in East Glasgow, which saw the empty space as an opportunity to create an original locale while preserving its genuine spirit, and called to reuse the rough urban area as a performative playground. The audience was invited to an augmented outdoor exhibition: the walls and floors of the underpass were captioned and transformed into an imaginary gallery space. Each caption was QR-coded and linked to eight visual “provocations” that suggested possible interactions with the place. These ranged from surface examinations to myth creation and explored aspects such as social usability, history, liminality, philosophy, art, and environmental impact. Inspired by the Talking Wall – a local monument showcasing people’s recollections of their time in Saltcoats – I aimed to develop a system that communicates the intimacy and sentimental value we attach to specific places through personal memories. The inspiration comes from German publications on optical mineralogy, hence the name Licht Lessons. While exploring the concept of light, it felt natural to print the publication on transparent material, allowing real light to pass through and create interesting reflections.
